Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler on WWE’s Money in the Bank PPV

Both Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler recently gave their thoughts on last Sunday’s WWE Money in the Bank pay-per-view show. In a new blog posting, Ross discussed several topics from the event while Lawler focused on the ending to the Women’s Money in the Bank match during a recent episode of Dinner With The King podcast show.

On the topic of criticisms with several match endings, Ross stated he’s more interested in the matches themselves being good than worrying if the correct decision was made for endings. He also felt the show itself did a good job to setup potential SummerSlam storylines.

“Unlike some fans who follow me on Twitter (@JRsBBQ), and thanks if you do, I am more interested in execution and effort than I am the results of most matches including the MITB bouts Sunday night. This PPV was one primarily positioned to future developing storylines with SummerSlam in particular in WWE’s creative cross hairs.”

In regards to the ending of the Women’s Money in the Bank match, both Ross and Lawler had different opinions. Ross acknowledged Ellsworth grabbing the briefcase was a controversial decision but didn’t have a real problem with the ending itself.

“James Ellsworth winning the MITB match for Carmella was controversial to say the least and one can likely expect that matter to be followed up on significantly on Tuesday’s SmackDown Live. Ellsworth could have a trip to the woodshed in his immediate future by a bevy of hostile ladies.”

On the other hand, Lawler was very disappointed with the ending since he felt it didn’t fit at all with the historic nature of the match and all the hard work done in recent years to change the perception of women’s wrestling in the WWE. Like Ross, he also felt it was something that needed to be fixed quickly by the WWE which did happen during this week’s Smackdown episode.

“That’s one thing that disturbed me, and hopefully they will fix that in some kind of way. That’s what WWE has been about. We don’t even call them Divas anymore; it’s the women’s division because it’s about empowering women. So much of the emphasis that the WWE has put on the women’s division has done that.

That’s why I was disappointed to see, in the first ever, historic Women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match, that they had to have a man climb the ladder and retrieve the Money in the Bank briefcase.

I’m one of them [people who are upset about the finish].”

On the topic of Maria and Mike Kanellis debut, Ross felt it was a very smart decision for Mike Bennett to use Maria’s last name and both being a very good addition to Smackdown.

“Endorse the hiring of Mike and Maria Kanellis, and Mike discarding his last name Bennett to take Maria’s name is a ‘Heat seeker’ and in a good way, in my opinion. Quality people added to the locker room is always a good thing.”
