According to Heat Vision, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson will star along with Josh Hutcherson in the Journey to the Center of the Earth sequel, titled Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. Johnson is set to play the boyfriend of Hutcherson’s mom. In the film, Hutcherson is forced to bring him on a trip to a mythical and monstrous island in an adventure to find his missing grandfather. The film is loosely based off of the Jules Verne story The Mysterious Island.
Casting for three other new characters will be announced in the next few weeks. Filming will take place in North Carolina and Hawaii, and will start in late October. The targeted release date is September 23rd, 2011.
It’s interesting to note that the first “Journey” movie starred actor Brandon Frasier, but he and the studio were unable to agree on the sequel’s filming schedule, so he was replaced. Frasier was the star of the movie which launched Johnson’s movie career back in 2001, The Mummy Returns.
