Daytona International Speedway president Joie Chitwood was on 740-AM The Game in Orlando and praised John Cena.
“I have to tell you, John Cena is an outstanding individual,” Chitwood said. “He was going to waive the green flag as the honorary starters.
“Once we went into the delay situation, he said he was staying. He would rent his own plane to fly to an event in Portland, Oregon for Monday night. And if the race started at noon he would still be there, and if we couldn’t get it in Monday he would charter his own plane and fly back from Portland so he could give the command. He wanted us to know that he made a commitment to us and he was going to live up to his commitment no matter what.
“I told John I’ve never been around a celebrity that made that kind of offer. And I told him that if we can’t get the event in where he can participate, he has an open invitation from me to come back for the Coke Zero (400) or the Daytona 500 and he can name the position he wants. That’s how much I thought of his offer and how much I appreciate him stepping up and living up to that commitment.”
