— The Rock and John Cena are featured on the front page of the Houston Chronicle’s star section today, promoting the twentieth anniversary episode of RAW next week. The picture they used is part of a profile by columnist Ken Hoffman covering the history of RAW and opens with, “On Jan. 11, 1993, a 500-pound wrestler named Yokozuna sat on a wrestler named Koko B. Ware, who carried a bird named Frankie into the ring, and one of the most popular, enduring shows in television history began.”
The article, which will be online on Friday, concludes: “Raw will be around another 20 years, and in some town in January 2033, there will be a ring with a good guy vs. a bad guy, and somebody with a mask will dropkick an evil rulebreaker from Parts Unknown. It’s just wrestling or sports entertainment or whatever you want to call it.”
— ESPN has debuted a new WWE Power Rankings section on their website, which looks at the top WWE superstars for each week.
As for why they are including pro wrestling on a sports website, writer Jon Robinson wrote: “And before you head to the comments with the whole “it’s fake!” talk, we realize the outcomes are predetermined in the same way you should realize there’s no way to fake getting press-slammed on top of a ladder. The ribs hurt whether or not the outcome is legit, and we’re showing respect to the athletes/performers who put their bodies on the line every week to entertain millions of “yes!” screaming fans.”
The list features the top ten superstars, their previous week’s rank and how much they are “trending”. To check out this week’s list, you can go here.
