While Bruno Sammartino has said that a statue of him will be built where the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh used to be, David Morehouse (president and CEO of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins) said that it will not happen. The team owns the developmental rights to the land, which is across from their home at the Consol Energy Center. The Penguins played at the Civic Arena from 1967-2010.
Morehouse said that there are no plans for a statue of any kind at the site. It’s also unlikely the Penguins would allow a statue to go up so close to their own statue of Mario Lemieux, the club’s owner and greatest player. That statue was dedicated in March 2012 across the street from the Civic Arena site.
