Jimmy Korderas: ‘The Undertaker’s The Greatest Of All-Time!’

The business of “Pro-Wrestling” is a very subjective form of entertainment for the viewer. This invariably leads to some interesting discussions and debates revolving around the wrestling business. If there is one thing wrestling fans are not afraid of is to express their opinion on almost every wrestling related topic. Don’t get me wrong, this is not a condemnation of them for doing so but rather a testament to their devotion to it. I include myself in this group. I am definitely guilty of enjoying a good debate, maybe a little too much as I sometimes defend my position with a little too much gusto.

Which WWE superstar is the greatest of all time has been debated about and at times has turned into very heated arguments. Fans are universally split on their choice. Many would pick the Heartbreak Kid, Shawn Michaels, while others might select 16 times World Champion Ric Flair, some may even say The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Hulk Hogan, or Bruno etc.

I believe the Undertaker is arguably the greatest WWE superstar of all time. When ever I have this conversation with fans, his name is the one that hardly ever gets mentioned but I believe should be included on the very short list of candidates. Before all the “smart marks” roll their eyes, let me state my case.

Let us begin with his character or his gimmick. The role of the Undertaker was seemingly made for the man who portrayed him. There is absolutely no one other than Mark Calloway that could have made this character standout the way he did. Add to that how wonderfully he protected his character. I’m not talking about wins and losses but rather his Undertaker persona. He rarely was out of character in or out of the ring which added to the mystique of the Deadman. He also reinvented and evolved the character to prevent it from getting stale. This contributed to the character’s longevity. Someone else may have made the gimmick work to a lesser degree and become a good mid-card level attraction but Mark Calloway made the Undertaker a main eventer right out of the gate and continued to be throughout his storied career.
