Report – Could Brock Lesnar’s SummerSlam Match Be In Jeopardy?

For those wondering, it’s possible that Brock Lesnar’s SummerSlam match could be in jeopardy. It would depend on the New York State Athletic Commission (which also regulates pro wrestling) recognizing suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commission if they decided to give one to Brock for his USADA drug test failure. A two-year suspension is the standard penalty for PEDs.

Athletic commissions usually recognize suspensions from other states and some commissions like those in New York, Pennsylvania and Kentucky, still regulate pro wrestling with boxing and MMA. WWE, which claims it promotes “sports entertainment”, still has a promoters license to run events in New York. Event Services Inc, a subsidiary of WWE, is listed as the licensed promoter on the New York State Athletic Commission’s website.

A source who interacts with NYSAC representatives at pro wrestling events said that if Lesnar is suspended in Nevada, the NYSAC may stop him from fighting in New York MMA events but not wrestling events because wrestlers in New York don’t have individual licenses. Only promoters are required to have a license in the state. The NSYAC also does not have a drug testing policy for wrestlers. The source added that a NYSAC representative told him that they can’t really penalize wrestlers.

As an example, the NYSAC doesn’t let wrestlers fight in the crowd at indy shows (which isn’t enforced at WWE events). If they do, the promoter is threatened with penalties. They can only penalize the promoter and not the wrestlers since only the promoters are required to carry a license. Therefore, the NYSAC couldn’t prevent Brock from wrestling at SummerSlam although they could penalize WWE’s promoter’s license for letting him be a part of it.

Brock Lesnar is scheduled to fight Randy Orton at SummerSlam in Brooklyn on August 21.
