Chris Jericho showed up at New Japan’s Power Struggle event today in a video challenging Kenny Omega for the IWGP US Heavyweight Championship at Wrestle Kingdom 12.
There has been a “Twitter beef” between Chris Jericho and Kenny Omega recently with almost everyone correctly assuming it was a storyline rather than a shoot. The speculation was that a match would take place on Chris Jericho’s cruise ship in October 2018, especially with the Young Bucks and Marty Scurll already scheduled to appear. But no, we won’t have to wait that long as Chris Jericho will face Kenny on January 4th 2018.
This will be the first time since 1999 that Chris Jericho has wrestled outside of WWE and the first time returning to New Japan Pro Wrestling since 1997. While Jericho has obviously lost a step since his younger days, this is still a personal dream match of mine with one of my all-time favourites challenging one of my current favourites. The Wrestle Kingdom 12 card also features Naito Vs. Okada for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship and a four-way match for the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship. It’s looking like a fantastic card for the event in the Tokyo Dome.
You can see the Chris Jericho video, which aired after Kenny Omega defeated Trent Baretta, below.
