Triple H, who runs NXT, is now in charge of 205 Live as of two weeks ago, according to PWInsider. Vince McMahon previously had control of the show and has stepped aside, allowing Triple H to now oversee it.
After the release of Enzo Amore, it was announced last week that there would be a tournament to declare a new Cruiserweight Champion.
Triple H’s idea is to bring the show back to what made the original Cruiserweight Classic so special, which includes different presentation and a focus on the in-ring work. Vince McMahon was said to be more focused on the personalities of the wrestlers (not necessarily a bad thing…) and would sometimes work one on one with the roster.
The feeling among some backstage was that 205 Live was echoing Raw and SmackDown rather than being its own unique style. That’s definitely been a big feeling among fans (including me). It has always seemed pointless to have the Cruiserweights wrestle extremely standard, basic “WWE style” matches.
NXT’s Roderick Strong was brought onto 205 Live on last night’s show, defeating Hideo Itami to advance in the Cruiserweight tournament. Strong was specifically brought in by Triple H as part of the shift to focus more in-ring work and to freshen up the roster. There may be even more additions going forward.
