Wednesday’s episode of AEW Dynamite featured a ROH World Television Championship match between Samoa Joe and Minoru Suzuki, which was won by Joe. Following the match Jay Lethal and Sonjay Dutt confronted Joe and revealed their new partner Satnam Singh, who proceeded to attack Joe to end the show.
The Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer reported that his sources stated that Singh’s debut was meant to help build AEW’s brand name in India. Singh’s debut reportedly also had a lot to do with the recent WarnerMedia and Discovery merger.
Meltzer reported that AEW currently airs on Discovery owned Eurosport channel in India, which was a deal AEW CEO Tony Khan made based on Discovery’s intentions to merger with WarnerMedia at the time.
Prior to Wednesday’s show, Khan reportedly had been working on plans for a storyline angle meant to be a breakthrough moment for the company in the Indian market. Singh reportedly was chosen for the angle due to him being renown in India for being currently the only Indian-born player ever drafted in the NBA in 2015 despite him only ever playing in the league’s developmental G League and Canada’s National Basketball League.
Meltzer reported that Singh will be managed by Sonjay Dutt and this new group will be used to help promote AEW in the Indian market and be pushed as the lead act for the company in India.
