Saturday’s Slammiversary 2023 event for Impact Wrestling in Windsor, Ontario, Canada featured Eric Young making his surprise return to the company. Young was revealed to be the mystery tag team partner for Scott D’Amore for his match against Bully Ray and Deaner at the event.
Fightful Select reported that their sources stated that the reason why Young was able to return to Impact was due to he had asked and was granted his release from WWE this past April. Young’s 90-day no-compete clause reportedly had expired last week. Prior to his release, Young had been with WWE since this past November.
Those spoken to within WWE stated that it was not a coincidence that Young had asked for his release right after WWE’s announcement of a sale to Endeavor. Young reportedly did not want to work with WWE Executive Chairman Vince McMahon after the deal was announced and it became evident that McMahon would be back in the fold in an official capacity.
Young reportedly had cited moral, creative, and personal reasons as to why he did not want to work with McMahon in WWE. It was reported that Young is currently the only known talent who had asked for their release directly due to issues regarding McMahon’s return to the company earlier this year.
In regards to WWE’s plans for Young, it was reported that WWE officials did have some creative plans in place for Young that was scheduled to start after this past April’s WrestleMania 39 event.
