As noted before, Rey Fenix’s contract had been originally set to expire this past September but AEW had added almost a full year’s worth of injury time to his contract and have had no plans to release him.
Fenix’s profile was recently removed from AEW’s roster page on their official website.
The Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer reported that his sources stated that the current belief is that Fenix was released from the rest of his contract similar to what happened with Ricky Starks (now known as Ricky Saints) and Malakai Black. Meltzer reported that Fenix is currently expected to join WWE as soon as possible.
PWInsider’s Mike Johnson reported that his sources confirmed that Fenix was released from his contract and is currently a free agent. Johnson reported that Fenix is also currently expected to head to WWE.
Prior to his rumored release, Fenix had been signed with AEW since February of 2019.
