AEW CEO Tony Khan held a media scrum on Thursday to promote this Sunday’s AEW Double or Nothing 2025 event at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona.
Some of the notable highlights included:
- On the topic of an update on the status of AEW pay-per-view events airing on MAX, AEW CEO Tony Khan stated that he has not been told any new updated over this situation. Khan also stated that there was never an expectation that the technology for MAX to stream live wrestling events would be ready in the first or second quarter of 2025 so it is not a case of a delay on MAX’s end. Khan also did not address of talk about Triller and why they are not carrying Double or Nothing. Khan did praise Amazon Prime for airing AEW PPVs.
- On the topic of the perception that Dynamite has improved creatively and if he attributes that to anything specific like new people being involved, new process, and other new aspects, Khan stated that he has tightened things up and there are less people now involved. Khan also stated that the improvement is subjective but brought up how there is data showing AEW’s audience for Dynamite grew in the first quarter and they are doing “really well” in the second quarter of this year. Khan also stated that he has gone back to his pandemic era mindset when they were in Daily’s Place for his reason for the changes. Khan also stated that Collision has also been doing great in the first and second quarter of this year based on their data.
- On the topic of the current backstage and locker room morale, Khan stated that the current morale is the most positive its been since the pandemic era and he loves coming to work.
- On the topic of the potential of debuting a Women’s Tag Team Championship in the future and current focus on rebuilding up the men’s tag division, Khan stated “AEW is having a great 2025, and I’m trying to build us to the strongest point we’ve been. We’re taking great steps. That is something I’d like to do and is a goal for me. You can see there is a number of great tandems and alliances. There are some great tag matches in the women’s division. Right now, I’m also focused on building back the men’s tag division. We’ve had a lot of injuries there, and now we’re trying to get people healthy and get the best teams working together. As I’m rebuilding the men’s tag division, that is something I’m interested in doing in the future. There are a lot of great teams in the women’s division and a lot of great partnerships and rivalries that would lend themselves to those matches. As I’m building back the tag division to get it to its strongest point, which I think is moving in a good direction, and as we get people healthy, and when you look at some of the great tag matches, the division is getting better. We have great talent, and now it’s about getting people healthy. In 2025, I’ve been trying to put on the very best shows we possibly can. Whether it’s having an injury to Buddy or Kevin Knight, who was in a team with Speedball Bailey, not an injury, but we lost him to the Super Juniors. He’ll be back. As we’re building the best shows on TV week in and week out, that’s something I want to get to: the best tag team wrestling in the world. We have the best wrestlers, and I am interested in (AEW Women’s Tag Team Titles). I’m also trying to build the tag division I have right now. It is something I’m interested in doing, and it is realistic to see at some point.”
- On the topic of why the Anarchy in the Arena match is not the main event for this year’s Double or Nothing event, Khan stated that this is not the first time that has been the case. Khan also stated that a lot of matches were compelling for the final slot and he feels it is important to focus on the whole card and not just match placement.
- On the topic of AEW’s viewership split for shows since being on MAX for simulcasts, Khan stated that the over-50 growth of AEW’s audience has been on cable and satellite while their younger viewers group has been on MAX. Khan stated that it does not affect him not having specific MAX data for shows but it is the most important that they are growing in general.
- On the topic of Darby Aliin’s recent successful climb of Mount Everest, Khan stated “Darby Allin is one the greatest wrestlers in AEW and we’re so proud of what he’s accomplished. He did it, he successfully climbed Mount Everest. It was something that was a big goal of his. He went on this journey with, I think two goals in mind. One of his goals, he absolutely had to focus on as he ascended Mount Everest is this journey he was going on and becoming the first pro wrestler to ever climb Mount Everest and one of the first pro athletes. It’s something he should celebrate and it’s an absolutely incredible achievement. I love Darby Allin and I think he’s a great person. He’s somebody who loves AEW, the fans love Darby, and he’s a huge part of our locker room. I hope he’ll come back here and I hope he makes it down Mount Everest as safe as he made it up. I look forward to seeing him back here. Whenever Darby can make it back, we’re excited to have him back. He’s one our top stars and I look forward to seeing Darby again.“
