Backstage Update on AEW Double or Nothing 2025 Main Event & When Plans Were Finalized for Winner

As noted before, Hangman Adam Page defeated Will Ospreay to become the winner of this year’s Men’s Owen Hart Foundation Cup tournament in the main event of this past Sunday’s AEW Double or Nothing 2025 event in Glendale, Arizona.

PWInsider’s Mike Johnson reported that his sources stated that AEW officials had a lot of back-and-forth talks over who should win the Men’s Owen Hart Foundation Cup Finals match up until late this past Sunday when a decision was finalized for Page to win and avenge his loss to Ospreay in last year’s tournament.

Johnson reported that the reason why the finish to this match was very protected was not due to any political-related reasons and instead simply due to AEW CEO Tony Khan had already made up his mind and purposely did not inform anyone until very late as a way to protect the creative process and prevent it from being leaked before the match.

Fightful Select reported that their sources stated Page and Ospreay both found out earlier in the weekend that page would go over. It was reported that Page and Ospreay had pushed for the other to win and Khan was non-committal through the process when talent would ask him what the result was going to be. Most within AEW reportedly believed that Ospreay would win and the reaction backstage to Page’s victory was one of shock.

It was reported that while the match was a very physical one, both Page and Ospreay seemed to be feeling fine after the match.

AEW World Champion Jon Moxley reportedly leaned towards wanting Page to win the match but it is currently not known if he had any bearing on the decision for the match result.

In regards to the match itself, it was reported that the match earned a lot of praise backstage and the general feeling was that the show was very positive.
