Backstage Update on Kota Ibushi’s AEW In-Ring Return Match & Reason for Trent Beretta as Opponent

As noted before, Kota Ibushi made his surprise return to AEW at this past Saturday’s AEW Collision show and was recently announced to be facing off against Trent Beretta for his in-ring return at Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite show in Kent, Washington.

Fightful Select reported that their sources stated that AEW officials viewed Beretta as being an appropriate matchup for Ibushi’s in-ring return due to his familiarity with the American television style of wrestling and the Japanese style that Ibushi is more familiar with.

It was reported that those spoken to stated that Ibushi is in a much better place physically than he has been in a long time. Prior to his return, Ibushi had been out of action for AEW since January of 2024 due to injuries to both of his ankles and surgery and wrestled sparingly outside of AEW over the past year.

AEW’s Original Plans for Motor City Machine Guns for All In 2024 Had MCMG Signed with Company

Motor City Machine Guns’ Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin have been signed with WWE since September of 2024. Prior to their signing with WWE, AEW had also been interested in signing the tag team following their departures from TNA Wrestling.

Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp reported that his sources stated that MCMG did have meetings with AEW last year for a potential deal that did not come to fruition in the end.

Sapp reported that AEW officials original plans were for MCMG to feud with the Young Bucks for the AEW World Tag Team Championship leading to a match at All In: London 2024.

Those spoken to reportedly stated that during MCMG’s talks with AEW, things went “radio silent” leading to those within AEW to believe that the team were WWE bound.

Sapp reported that MCMG’s signing with WWE lead to AEW officials pivoting on their original plans for the Young Bucks to defend their tag titles against FTR and The Acclaimed instead for All In: London 2024.
