As noted before, Saturday’s WWE SummerSlam 2025 Night 1 show at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey featured Seth Rollins making his surprise return from injury and successfully cashed in his Men’s Money in the Bank briefcase to become the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion.
Fightful Select reported that their sources stated that Rollins’ supposed knee injury against LA Knight at the July 12th WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event show was the spark for a master plan that very few people knew about within WWE. It was reported that Rollins had always been booked to win the match and the abrupt ending was designed to sell the injury. It was also reported that when Rollins had returned to the back, many including some of his closest contacts were left worried because they did not hear from him right away.
In regards to Rollins making an appearance backstage at the following night’s Evolution 2 event, it was reported that Rollins showing up on crutches was a deliberate move by WWE officials who knew it would leak out to the public. It was reported that when rumblings began to surface that an “injury angle” had been planned for the Saturday Night’s Main Event show, some of those spoken to stated that they were not sure if it was a total work or a cover for a smaller injury. It was also reported that those who usually talk when contacted went completely silent over the situation.
It was reported that by the time Rollins appeared on The Rich Eisen Show, the general belief within WWE had shifted heavily towards his injury being a work. Several producers and talents reportedly stated that they were never directly told the truth and just assumed something was up.
In regards to WWE’s actual cash-in plans for Rollins, it was reported that WWE’s plans for the cash-in had been on the table since before the July 12th SNME show but it was absent from the internal rundowns for Saturday’s SummerSlam Night 1 show. Those spoken to reportedly stated that as of the afternoon of Saturday’s show, staff had been told to not expect a cash-in. This reportedly was later updated to “not expecting a cash-in” but things only clicked into place for many backstage during the CM Punk vs. Gunther match when Rollins showed up and the pieces finally came together.
It was reported that the execution of the cash-in was so secretive that it caught nearly everyone off guard when it happened on the show.
