NJPW Reportedly Had Discussed Shinsuke Nakamura as Potential Final Opponent for Hiroshi Tanahashi

As noted before, this past Friday’s WWE house show event in Tokyo, Japan featured Shinsuke Nakamura giving a shoutout to NJPW President and talent Hiroshi Tanahashi following his tag team victory at the show.

Fightful Select reported that their sources within New Japan Pro Wrestling had confirmed that Nakamura’s name was recently discussed internally as a potential final opponent for Tanahashi’s retirement match at Wrestle Kingdom 20. Those spoken to stated that Nakamura’s name was more of being a “pipe dream” than anything substantial.

Those spoken to reportedly stated that several factors make this potential match unlikely such as Nakamura being under a WWE contract and the unlikely chances of WWE allowing the match to happen. Those spoken reportedly also gave their concerns about how the impact of using a WWE talent would have on their current relationship with AEW and CMLL.

It was reported that it is currently not clear if Nakamura would even be available outside of WWE. NJPW officials reportedly currently believe that Nakamura had re-signed last year but this is something that has yet to be confirmed by their sources.
