John Cena Reflects on His Retirement Match at Dec. 13th WWE SNME Show

As noted before, Saturday’s WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event show in Washington, D.C. featured Gunther defeating John Cena in Cena’s retirement match. This match was notable for Cena placing his sweatbands and shoes in the ring after the match to symbolize his retirement from his in-ring wrestling career.

Cena reflected earlier today on Instagram about his retirement match against Gunther posting just a photo of the wrestling gear he left in the ring at the end of the show.

Backstage Reaction to Cena’s Final Match Loss

As noted before, Saturday’s WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event show in Washington, D.C. featured Gunther defeating John Cena in Cena’s retirement match. This match was notable for the crowd’s very negative reaction including them chanting “bullshit” and booing WWE CCO Paul “Triple H” Levesque when he came out to the ring with others for the post-match retirement tribute for Cena. This negative reaction continued during Levesque’s appearance on the post-show and included brief “AEW” chants by some in the crowd directed at him.

Fightful Select reported that their sources stated that WWE is adamant that Cena is not wrestling again nor do they plan on asking him to do so.

In regards to the general reaction backstage over Cena’s loss, it was reported that there were plenty of people on both sides of the fence regarding the finish of Cena’s last match. Most on the creative side were in favor of Cena losing while plenty of talent had wished Cena would have been booked to win but understood the reason for Gunther winning and the booking moving forward. It was reported that none of the talent spoken to were livid about the finish.

In regards to WWE CCO Paul “Triple H” Levesque’s reaction, those spoken to reportedly stated that Levesque had a smile on his face in the Gorilla position over the finish. Levesque reportedly also reacted backstage to the boos he received much like he did on camera.

In regards to Gunther, it was reported that the heat from fans at the show was so heavy that he legitimately required to be escorted out of the venue with security for safety reasons.

It was reported that there were a lot of off-the-cuff moments that took place that were not originally planned for the show, including the post-show emotional ringside interview with Cody Rhodes and some of the in-ring ceremony stuff during Cena’s post-match tribute.

One source spoken to with ties to NBC Universal reportedly stated that this was the most buzz they’ve seen for a WWE event on Peacock outside of WrestleMania events.
