Kazuchika Okada Comments on He Wanted To Do A Proper Destino To Hiroshi Tanhashi at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 20

As noted before, NJPW’s Wrestle Kingdom 20 event earlier this month in Tokyo, Japan featured Kazuchika Okada defeating Hiroshi Tanahashi in Tanahashi’s retirement match. This match was notable for both Okada and Tanahashi paying tribute with spots involving them hitting the finishing moves of Katsuyori Shibata, Shinsuke Nakamura, and Tetsuya Naito

Tokyo Sports held a recent interview with Okada. One of the topics discussed included Okada’s thoughts about his Destino spot in tribute to Naito that he was unable to perform properly during his match against Tanahashi.

“I actually wanted to do a proper (orthodox) Destino. But when I practiced, I couldn’t do it at all. Maybe it’s because I’m big, but it was hard to do… It’s such a difficult move that I wonder how Naito was able to do it. Well, the form was a little awkward, but I think I was able to do it for Naito.”

In a recent interview with Fightful, TNA commentator Matthew Rehwoldt gave his thoughts about his transition from his in-ring wrestling career to his current commentary career. Rehwoldt stated “That was a weird time. Because I joined TNA in the summer of 2021 and I was wrestling. I was with Deonna Purrazzo and stuff. I had also made a couple of small appearances for New Japan Strong at the time and within a couple months of each other, both New Japan and TNA asked me to do commentary for shows. It was really one of those things, ‘cause at the time in TNA, D’Lo Brown and Matt Stryker were leaving. They were bringing in Tom Hannifan and they just needed somebody else for Strong in New Japan. So it was one of those moments of just like, ‘Hey, the world is knocking on this door. It’s kind of put nudging you this way.’ Not that I’m not proud of what I have done and can, in theory, still do in the ring. I’m not hurt, people. So many people always ask that. No, I’m not irreparably injured. But it was just the more and more I leaned into it the more and more I kind of realized that this, I think at the end of the day and at the end of my career, is my superpower in pro wrestling—behind the microphone telling the stories. I always say my superpower is getting people excited about the things that excite me. Which is why I do the podcast that I do. Which is why I dive so headfirst into the commentary and into the broadcasting and I’ve really, really loved it and I have not regretted it once.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)
