A recent episode of 2GB Sydney’s Afternoons with Michael McLaren podcast featured AEW TNT Champion Kyle Fletcher as the guest. One of the topics discussed included Fletcher’s thoughts about how he first got into wrestling.
“I had a friend at school who watched it, was a fan of it, went over to his house and it was on. You watch one match, you see someone get dropped on their head and you go, ‘This is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.’”
Fletcher also gave his thoughts about the backstage atmosphere in professional wrestling and specifically the strong and passionate bond in AEW’s locker room.
“You have something you’re so passionate about. Like, I left my family, my friends to pursue this crazy dream. So you have, 20, 30 blokes in a locker room that all feel the same way about this super niche interest. Of course, you’re going to have that bond with them.
AEW specifically, the locker room vibe is just like I said, we’re just so passionate about it, we love this company, we want to see it succeed so we’re all just egging each other on.
It’s a really cool vibe, absolutely.”
In a separate recent interview with the Downunder The Ring podcast, Fletcher gave his thoughts about his belief that AEW’s current momentum is due to the unpredictability it brings to pro wrestling.
“It’s part of the reason why kind of have the momentum we have right now. Wrestling was done a certain way, and still is being done a certain way. It’s following the rule book, it’s following what works. AEW, since its inception in 2019, it’s been about breaking that mold and stepping outside of the comfort zone and doing things that people don’t expect. That’s part of the reason why I love the company and why so many people love watching the company. It could be any random Dynamite or Collision; Tommaso Ciampa showed up and won the TNT Title in his first match in the company. It’s unheard of. It’s why it’s so cool and what I love this company and the wrestling landscape. It’s so fun.”
Fletcher also gave his thoughts about the potential of him reuniting with his former United Empire group in the future.
“It’s a good question and a hard question to answer. Wrestling is so unpredictable. Every person that has been in United Empire or the Don Callis Family, we all have our own individual goals and aspirations. I don’t if everyone in the United Empire has the aspiration to come to AEW or vice versa. It’s hard to kind of nail it down. I would say that you never know what is going to happen or who is going to show up where. That’s what I love about the wrestling landscape nowadays; it is unpredictable and anything can happen. I would not put it out of the realm of possibility, but I have no clear definitive answer.”
