As noted before, this past Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite Beach Break 2026 show in Clearwater, Florida featured Kenny Omega defeating MJF to become the new AEW World Champion. This match was notable for featuring the stipulation of if Omega lost, then he would never be allowed to challenge for the AEW World title again in his AEW career.
Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that his sources stated that AEW officials original plans were for the AEW World title match and stipulation to take place at their Redemption event on July 26 in Montreal, Canada. Meltzer reported that the idea was due to the show taking place in Canada and the name of the show being called Redemption, it was meant to be about Omega getting his last shot after two high-profile losses in AEW.
Meltzer reported that those spoken to stated that the push to move the AEW World title match to AEW television instead was believed to have been made by MJF. Meltzer also reported that the reason for the change is currently not known but AEW CEO Tony Khan had approved it and he must feel he’s got something worthy as a replacement for the upcoming Redemption event.
