Evan Husney on Dark Side of the Ring Season 7 Dedicating Three Hours To TNA & Talking To Karen Jarrett

Fightful held a recent interview with Dark Side of the Ring series co-creator and Executive Producer Evan Husney. One of the topics discussed included Husney’s thoughts about the Dark Side of the Ring series dedicating three hours to TNA and Jeff Jarrett for the season seven premiere

“I think at first glance, you might think, ‘Oh, my God, they’re doing three hours of a career bio of Jeff’s entire career trajectory. I don’t know if that’s the right move.’ But this was designed to be a look at TNA, which is really a part of wrestling history that we haven’t touched yet on the show. I’ve always been fascinated by it. It’s heyday happened during a time I wasn’t really watching wrestling. So this is all stuff that retroactively I got into and was fascinated by.

When we did that Who Killed WCW? series two years ago now, we sort of had this idea like we could do these little mini series, spin-offs, if you will, about promotions and the stories behind them and the people’s journeys through them and their personal stories, trying to trying to start them, keep them alive, so on and so forth. TNA was one that we talked about. ECW was another and for whatever reason we couldn’t get a standalone TNA thing off the ground.

So we were just like, ‘F it. Let’s do it for Dark Side,’ and we did. I’m super glad that we did and it’s just it’s proved to be more emotional, go places. I never would have thought. It’s just as much a personal story as it is a larger company story.”

Husney also gave his thoughts about his talks with Karen Jarrett for the episode and the process that led to her being involved.

“The whole thing started with Jeff. He was phone call number one, obviously. You don’t really have these shows without him participating and being into it. We’ve worked with Jeff a couple of times in the past, Tales from the Territories maybe was the first time, and then he did our Bash at the Beach 2000 episode, and we always hit it off. We always had a great time with him, and I just hit him one day with this idea, ‘Would you be down to go back and sort of rehash TNA, get into the thick of it? Maybe we could get some people on camera that have never spoken before,’ and once he was down, we just had a conversation about, here’s the people we’d really like to speak to.

Karen being one of them, know to run because I was like, ‘I’m sure she has her own point of view that’s really not been seen or heard from.’ To my surprise, boy was she captivating on camera and she does a hell of a job on the show. I think she treats everything with a lot of care and respect because obviously there’s some complexity there and shared families, blended families. I think it’s kind of a once-and-for-all setting the record straight kind of thing about what went on in TNA and how her and Jeff got together.”
