Tony Khan on AEW Doing Its Best Viewership for Shows “In A Long Time”, How The COVID Pandemic Helped Leveled The Odds For AEW Against WWE, & His Belief Sting’s Son Steven Is Going To Be A “Tremendous Wrestler”

A recent episode of the Power Players with Brian Sozzi podcast featured AEW CEO Tony Khan as the guest. One of the topics discussed included Khan’s thoughts about his belief that excitment around AEW is at an all-time high and the viewership numbers AEW has been drawing for their shows recently have been the most the company has had in a “long time, if [not] ever.”

“Two years ago, we weren’t streaming on HBO Max yet. So the viewership now, the true viewership is actually much higher because not only do we have the TBS viewers, but also we have streaming viewership.So in reality, this is the hottest and most viewers we’ve had in a long time, if [not] ever. And it feels like the excitement around AEW today is at an all-time high.”

Khan also gave his thoughts about how the COVID pandemic ended up helping AEW in regards to leveling the odds against WWE in a playing field between the two companies.

“That was the best experience I ever had. That’s the best thing that ever happened to the company. It really leveled the odds for the two wrestling promotions and so many people around the world, to this day, talk about the quality of wrestling and say when you put it back like that and put it on a level playing field, so many people saw that AEW is the best wrestling. For me, that was the best experience, and those are the shows I’m most proud of.”

Khan also gave his thoughts about the progress Sting’s son Steven Borden has made so far early into his pro wrestling career and his belief that Steven will become a “tremendous wrestler” in the future.

“We’re training Sting’s son, Steven, right now. He wrestles before all the shows in what we call the ‘dark match.’ And I think he’s going to be a tremendous wrestler. I’m really, really proud of the work he’s doing.”
