Shota Umino Provides More Details About Being Diagnosed With A Concussion & Amnesia After NJPW G1 Climax 36 Night 1 Event

As noted before, Shota Umino had been out of action for New Japan Pro Wrestling due to a concussion injury he suffered at this past July’s G1 Climax 2026 Night 1 event in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. Besides a concussion injury, Umino had revealed that he had also suffered amnesia from his injury. Umino made his in-ring return to NJPW at their Road To Destruction 2026 event on September 5 in Ut​sunomiya, Japan.

NJPW’s NJPW1972 website held a recent interview with Umino. One of the topics discussed included Umino providing additional details about his concussion injury and amnesia symptoms he suffered.

“I was pretty much a shut-in for the first two weeks. Blue light is a shock to the brain and I was dealing with amnesia, so for a fortnight I didn’t leave the house and I couldn’t use the TV or my phone.

I wouldn’t be able to remember whether I turned the gas off or not, so I couldn’t cook for myself. And when I was able to go out as far as the convenience store, I would forget whether I locked the door or not. Like I would go back and forth three times, checking. And when I finally got there I’d realise I’d forgotten my wallet. That kind of thing.

The symptoms were pretty bad. But I got it checked out relatively quickly, and the doctors were awesome at making sure I took the right steps. I went through the proper procedures and there’s no abnormalities at all on my brain, so I’m completely good to go. But taking the right steps quickly is a big reason for that. All thanks to the company and the doctors making the right calls.”
