According to at least one prominent WWE Superstar, the recent increase in eye poke injuries is due to WWE pushing their talents to be more aggressive in the ring due to high definition cameras among other things.
WWE talents have also been working with the idea of barely missing on their strikes. WWE agents/producers have been working with the talents to throw their strikes harder and faster but to just miss for obvious reasons. The increase in intensity and speed has led to more and more injuries.
The source notes that this has led to people rushing their work, causing in-ring sloppiness as well as more injuries including “potato” shots, black eyes, concussions, eye pokes and even separated shoulders. We’ve seen A LOT of those types of injuries in recent weeks.
