In an interview with Bleacher Report, Kamala spoke about an incident in which he pulled a gun on Andre the Giant. Here are highlights:
On losing both of his legs: “I didn’t even want to look down at first. But when I came home (from the hospital), I would look down, and I’d cry a little. I’d think, ‘I’m not normal, am I? I’m not normal anymore. People are going to treat me like I’m not normal.’ But I made it through. I made it through. I still have crying spells, but they’re not as bad as they used to be.”
On the creation of the Kamala character with Jerry Lawler: “I told him, ‘I’m not embarrassed to do nothing.’ I was happy. I’d always wanted something like that. It gave me an identity. When I was walking to the ring that night, the police had to hold everyone back. Everyone wanted to get a look at me or take a picture. It gave me goose bumps. Lawler acted like he was scared to death of me. I was trying to keep from laughing. He was the one that created me. That was the birth of Kamala. I guess you could say I was born twice.”
On accepting his situation: “Don’t feel sorry for me. If you want to, encourage me. Embrace me. I’m going to be all right—just like I’ve always been. I’m still Kamala.”
He also talked about an altercation with Andre the Giant. When they first wrestled in 1983, there was a problem in the ring and it led to Kamala punching Andre backstage and busting his lip after Andre called him a “dumb SOB.” The next night he pulled a .357 Magnum on Andre and told him never to disrespect him again. Andre apologized. Kamala added that he then started to carry a smaller gun with him to the ring in a pouch in his loincloth. He never told his friends about it.
