Tommaso Ciampa is currently dealing with an unspecified injury, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
The severity of the injury is not known, but he had been working through it and the plan was that he would be able to work up until and including NXT TakeOver in April, then would take care of the injury, which would either mean surgery or time off. It’s not clear if that plan has changed.
Ciampa appeared to injure his left leg on the February 19 SmackDown, but it’s not known if this is the injury in question. During a Ciampa & Gargano match against The Bar, Ciampa attempted a sunset flip powerbomb on Sheamus off the top rope, but his left leg buckled and Sheamus also landed on Ciampa’s knee. The referee then went to check on Ciampa, who appeared to be in pain, and he threw up the “X” indicating a legit injury. Ciampa immediately tagged out, but was able to briefly get back in the match later and picked up the win with a quick roll up.
You can see the possible injury at the beginning of this video…
Ciampa actually wrestled in two matches the next night at the NXT TV tapings, so he was still able to work after the above injury. And an angle was done to set up his match at TakeOver, so it seems like WWE is confident enough that he’ll be able to wrestle. He wasn’t on TV this week and isn’t listed for upcoming NXT live events, probably to rest the injury.
Update
The injury in question is actually a neck injury, according to PWInsider. It’s been a lingering injury that he’s been dealing with for at least 4-5 weeks and possibly longer.
Ciampa and Gargano were scheduled to wrestle on Raw in a four-way match that would have featured Aleister Black & Ricochet, Zack Ryder & Curt Hawkins and a fourth team, with The Revival set to be at ringside, but the match was pulled and Black & Ricochet wrestled The Revival instead.
