As noted before, former WWE employee Janel Grant filed a lawsuit this past January against former TKO Executive Chairman Vince McMahon accusing McMahon of committing sex trafficking and sexual abuse towards her during her time in the company. Grant’s lawsuit was put on hold this past April over a request from the U.S. Department of Justice, who launched a criminal investigation into McMahon and joined the lawsuit as an “interested party.”
Grant’s attorney Ann Callis and PR rep Kendra Barkoff Lamy held a media scrum earlier today.
Among the topics discussed included Callis stating that they have not seen Netflix’s upcoming Mr. McMahon docuseries ahead of its official premiere. Callis also stated that she hopes that this docuseries does Grant’s story the justice it deserves.
“We have not seen the documentary. Janel deserves the opportunity to tell her full story, not be a part of someone else’s. She will get her day in court, and [Vince] McMahon will be held accountable. And Janel has the right to tell her story in her own way at the right time.
Janel’s story is an important one, and we hope Neftlix’s docuseries does it justice. Her experience is integral to an accurate and whole retelling of the story of the WWE and Mr. McMahon.”
On the topic of interactions with WWE since Grant’s lawsuit was filed, Callis stated that there was some initial outreach by WWE after the lawsuit was filed but it was very brief and there has been none since then.
On the topic of potential criminal charges against McMahon, Callis stated that they are considering seeking a criminal indictment against McMahon but the reason they have not done so yet is due to them wanting to take their time with the process and ensure its done correctly and not rushed. Callis also stated that they have not been frustrated with the lengthy amount of time the Southern District of New York has taken with their federal investigation into McMahon.
