New Japan Pro Wrestling’s NJPW1972.com website held a recent interview with Yota Tsuji. One of the topics discussed included Tsuji’s thoughts in character about his issues with NJPW’s current working relationship with AEW and him wanting both companies to cut ties with each other.
“Well, I don’t want to lose to AEW. I don’t like AEW. In all honesty, with the relationship between us the way it is, I’d like us to cut ties with them.
What has being with AEW done for NJPW, really? If it was an even handed relationship that’s one thing, but it’s not. There’s certainly a difference in terms of the money behind each company, but I don’t see that as a reason to be so weak willed. This is NJPW, dammit. Now on the other hand, Kazuchika Okada has played a part in selling the Tokyo Dome out. I have to admit to that. I’m sore that it isn’t an NJPW wrestler facing Tanahashi in his last match, but there isn’t anybody on the roster that has the connections to Tanahashi that Okada has, and I have to acknowledge that. “
Tsuji also gave his thoughts about the possibility of him NJPW bringing back the old IWGP Heavyweight Championship design should he win the IWGP World Heavyweight title at Wrestle Kingdom 20.
“Would the company bring it to the Dome? Once I win, I have to convince the company as well. From a company perspective it would take an admission that it was a mistake to get rid of it in the first place. I think that would be a sign of strength and courage. Nobody is perfect; life is about stumbling and picking ourselves up. So we’ll see. But if the belt is there then I’ll lift it right then and there.”
Tsuji is currently scheduled to face off against Konosuke Takeshita in a Title vs. Title match for the IWGP World Heavyweight and IWGP Global Heavyweight Championships at next month’s Wrestle Kingdom 20 event.
