Backstage Update on WWE’s Original Plans for Randy Orton vs. Cody Rhodes Match

Cody Rhodes is currently scheduled to be defending his Undisputed WWE Championship against Randy Orton at this April’s WrestleMania 42 event in Las Vegas, Nevada. Rhodes and Orton’s match is currently expected to be the main event of Night 1 on April 18th.

Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that his sources stated that WWE officials original plans for Rhodes’ match at WrestleMania 42 were for him to face off against Roman Reigns in a potential Hell in a Cell match before those plans were changed to him facing off against Drew McIntyre in that potential match type.

In regards to Orton becoming Rhodes’ opponent for WrestleMania, Meltzer reported that WWE officials made the decision for Rhodes to face off against Orton after “Big” Bronson Reed suffered a biceps tear injury leading to the decision to go with Orton vs. Rhodes and McIntyre vs. Jacob Fatu for matches for WrestleMania.

Meltzer reported that WWE officials original plans for Orton and Rhodes were for them to face off against each other in a major program after WrestleMania 42 and not for the event itself.
