AJ Styles Confirms He Was Supposed To Retain WWE U.S. Title at WWE Battleground 2017
A recent episode of the Phenomenally Retro podcast featured WWE Hall of Famer and co-host AJ Styles giving his thoughts about his match against Kevin Owens for the WWE United States Championship at WWE Battleground 2017. Styles revealed that he was supposed to have won the match and retained the title but he failed to kick out of a pin attempt from Owens in time.
“Here’s something that people don’t know. When I lost that one to him, I wasn’t supposed to lose. My shoulder was supposed to be up. I thought it was, I was pissed. I came back like, ‘What the freak is going on?’ Vince was like, ‘Your shoulder wasn’t up.’ I was like, ‘1000% it was up.’ I’m mad, not because I lost, because why the freak did he count something that wasn’t a pin? He goes, ‘Show him, take him to the truck and show him.’ I go back and watch it, sure enough, my shoulder is down. So, I go to Vince, ‘You’re right, I was wrong. Sorry about that.’”
