Callum Newman & Yuya Uemura Advances To Playoffs Round in NJPW G1 Climax 2026 Tournament

Thursday’s G1 Climax 2026 Night 17 event for New Japan Pro Wrestling in Tokyo, Japan featured Callum Newman and Yuya Uemura advancing to the playoffs round in this year’s G1 Climax tournament.

Newman advanced as the winner of B Group with 12 points and Uemura advanced as the group runner-up also with 12 points

Newman held the head-to-head tiebreaker against both Uemura and Gabe Kidd, who also ended with 12 points, for the group’s top spot. Uemura held the head-to-head tiebreaker against Kidd for the runner-up spot.

As a result, Newman will be facing off against Ryohei Oiwa and Uemura will be facing off against Yota Tsuji in the Semifinal Round of this year’s G1 Climax tournament.

Live Science reported that archaeologists recently discovered a 2,400 year old grave of a potential ancient pro wrestler in the city of Aspendos, Turkey. It was reported that researchers had discovered a skeleton alongside silver coins displaying wrestlers inside the tomb. It was also reported that Turkey’s Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy stated that the coins and other objects in the grave suggest the person “may have been involved in sports, perhaps even a wrestler.” The grave reportedly dates from between roughly 475 BC and 300 BC. It was reported that the city of Aspendos was known for producing silver coins that featured two wrestlers grappling on one side and the coins were minted for more than a century. Aspendos reportedly later built a stadium capable of holding around 8,000 spectators for wrestling, footraces and javelin events. It was also reported that there is currently not enough evidence to confirm that the person inside the grave was an actual wrestler.
