A recent episode of The Ariel Helwani Show podcast featured The New Level (Kofi & Austin Creed) as the guests. One of the topics discussed included Kofi and Creed’s thoughts about how their new contracts with AEW allows them to wrestle for other promotions as well.
Austin Creed – “We can jump around and do some other things. So we still have opportunities to go to other places and to wrestle people. So that fact, that tag team wrestling is all across the world, is something that’s really exciting to us.”
Kofi – “Yeah, anything and everything. Everything is on the table. I’m still getting used to being able to have so much freedom to be able to, again, just do what we want to do. So yeah, like, Austin said, there’s opportunities aplenty, as you see with a lot of the AEW wrestlers doing all kinds of things on the roster and then internationally as well. I think… I don’t remember who the promotion was that he was wrestling for, but somewhere in Africa, he was wrestling. He was the champion there in Africa somewhere, you know what I mean? So the possibilities are endless. And yeah, it’s very exciting to have those opportunities.”
In a separate recent interview with CBS Sports’ Shakiel Mahjouri, Kofi also gave his thoughts about how WWE’s offer for new restructured contracts not only included an over 50% pay cut but also included reduced roles in the company to justify the reduced salary.
“I think it was easy for sure. It was a little scary. It was a little scary because of the uncertainty. For the past two decades, I always knew where I was working. Financially, I knew what I had to do to make plans and prioritize my family’s well-being. We all knew the tangibles. All of a sudden, having that uncertainty of what’s next was very, very daunting.
I knew that we weren’t done. We didn’t have to be done over here. It’s amazing because there’s so much talent here to work with. That was what was really exciting.
So there was a lot of uncertainty, but it was all positive because… whatever route that we chose, it was going to be amazing. The result was going to be amazing. I’m so glad that all of this worked out with AEW now because the possibilities are endless.”
Kofi also gave his thoughts about their mentality was to find a solution after being told about the pay cut and reduced role rather than dwell on things for the future of their wrestling careers.
“So that’s really our mentality, figuring out what is next, because what’s next is coming regardless of the reason. We were never given that explanation, but we weren’t really looking for it. We didn’t really care to find out. We didn’t cry. It doesn’t really matter at the end of the day.”
