Becky Lynch on Her Real-Life Frustrations And Regrets During ‘The Man” Run, Her Not Being WWE’s First Choice for Inaugural WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion In 2016, & Her Belief Young WWE Wrestlers Should Not Achieve Too Much Too Soon

A recent episode of The Rich Eisen Show featured Becky Lynch as the guest. One of the topics discussed included Lynch’s thoughts about the creation of her “The Man” persona in WWE and how backstage frustrations played a role in the character’s creation.

“It was one of those things where I was just sick of taking a backseat, and that was kind of real. That angst was real. It was like always almost getting the shot and then never being the one that was picked, never being the one that they were going to hand the ball to and say, ‘Yeah, this is our girl. Go run with it.’

Sometimes, I did things that, to be honest with you, I regret. I said a lot of mean things, but it was all about selling the conflict, or at least that’s how I justified it to myself. But that was it. I’m not sitting around anymore. I am great, and I am going to claim my greatness.”

Lynch also gave her thoughts about her not being WWE’s first choice for the winner of the inaugural WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship in 2016.

“It was like even the first time that I won the Smackdown Women’s Championship first. That wasn’t the plan. No, but I think it was meant to go to Nikki Bella actually. Who by the way, a badass had just come back from her broken neck, but the audience kind of liked me, and once it was revealed, they just started chanting ‘Becky.’ And so kind of the office had to take notice of that and go, ‘Alright. I guess we got to go with her. But I don’t think the plan was ever going to be to give it to me again unless I took it. And so that was that opportunity of like, ‘Alright, I’m not sitting around. I’m going to make this as interesting as I possibly can.’”

Lynch also gave her thoughts about her belief that young WWE wrestlers need to build themselves up before achieving too much in their wrestling careers.

“I said this to one of the younger girls the other day, you know, you don’t want to achieve too much right now. You want to be percolating, because if you get there, you’re so young. What else is there? You’ve got to build to it. You’ve got to make sure that the audience wants it and that they’re galvanizing behind you. Let them bring you to it.

If you get it now, yeah, you see other people getting it and you want that for yourself. It’s just not going to feel as good because there’s so much time. Then you’re one-time, two-time, three-time, four-time, and then the audience doesn’t want to see you be a six-time, seven-time, eight-time, nine-time, 10-time champion. But that’s how it’s going to go.

The first time, it’s like when Chelsea won the title. Everybody’s like, ‘Yes, this is amazing. She did it.’ Everybody’s happy because they saw her journey to get there. I think it’s all about knowing your timing. Don’t be in a rush. It’ll all happen, if it’s meant to happen, when it’s going to happen.”
