Backstage Update on Sami Zayn’s Undisputed WWE Title Win at 9/11 WWE SmackDown Show

As noted before, this past Friday’s WWE SmackDown show in Mexico City, Mexico featured Sami Zayn defeating CM Punk to become the new Undisputed WWE Champion for the second time in his WWE career.

PWInsider’s Mike Johnson reported that his sources within WWE stated that they believe that WWE officials are currently considering a Roman Reigns vs. Sami Zayn match to headline this November’s Crown Jewel 2026 in Saudi Arabia for the reason for the title change.

Johnson reported that Zayn’s victory positions him into that match as the Undisputed WWE Champion and also gives him multiple challengers for the title as champion.

Johnson also reported that this decision also allows WWE to hold off on doing a Punk vs. Reigns rematch for another time down the road if and when the company decides to do it.

Dave Meltzer reported in a recent episode of the Wrestling Observer Radio that his sources stated that there were some people backstage who were against the idea of Zayn winning the Undisputed WWE title again.
