— Johnny Valiant recently spoke with Newsday about attending military school with Vince McMahon and more. Check out some highlights:
On first impressions of Vince: “He used to walk around, kind of posing and what not. By way of the magazines, I was told his dad was a top wrestling promoter in Washington D.C… that he was this wrestling czar’s son. I said, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me.’ And he said, ‘Yeah, my dad is a big shot.'”
On getting court-martialed after the two skipped a military drill (Vince was not): “I was court marshalled. I’ll never forget. I had tears in my eyes. When I left, I said, ‘I’ll see you Vince.’ He said, ‘Okay, Sully.’ The next time I saw him, my hair was bleached, I was at the Philadelphia Arena, and he had a microphone.”
On having some hard feelings toward Vince a few years ago when Howard Finkel asked for some robes to display for a future phyisical Hall of Fame: “He (Fink) said, ‘We can’t pay you for them.’ And I thought, ‘You can’t pay me, or you won’t pay me? You don’t have enough money for that, but you have enough money for Vince’s wife Linda to become a Senator?”
