In the latest edition of Television Week there is a piece on USA Network's Jeff Wachtel, the Executive Vice President of the cable network's series and long-form programming. Wachtel discusses several topics in the piece and one of them is a film based on the death of Bret Hart's brother, Owen Hart is in the works. The film will be about the events surrounding the death of Owen Hart as well as the lawsuit filed by his widow Martha Hart. The movie will be titled "Ring Of Lies".
It is known that WWE left the USA Network for TNN/Spike TV several years ago, however Wachtel claims the film isn't revenge against the company at all. He says that it's "inspired by a documentary about 'a 5-foot-2, 110-pound woman who basically brought the WWF to its knees."
In November 2002 The FX Network had placed a film titled "The Owen Hart Story" into development. It was in association with Paul A. Kaufman's Kaufman Co. for Artisan Television. Artisan is the production company behind such feature films as "The Blair With Project" and other big name productions. It is not known if this is the same project, under a new network or something completely different.
For those who are unaware about what happened to Bret Hart's younger brother, Owen Hart, here is what happened. Owen, the youngest son of the famous Hart wrestling family, passed away in May 1999 after falling while waiting to be lowered to the ring during the WWF's Over the Edge PPV in Kansas City. He was set to be lowered to the ring by a cord from the rafters, kind of like what Sting is famous for doing, and what Shawn Michaels, The Undertaker, and others have done in the past. He fell and landed on the corner ring post. Hart would have been 39 last Friday.
After settling with WWE, Martha Hart went on to found a charitable organization to help Canadian families in need in her husband Owen's name.
