Mark Andrews defeated Akira Tozawa in a Cruiserweight Championship tournament first round match

Andrews attacked Tozawa’s knee on the mat quite a bit while McGuinness brought up Drake Maverick’s history with Andrews from their time in the United Kingdom. He said Maverick is using that experience to bring the best in the world to the tournament. Andrews locked on an octopus stretch before turning it into a modified sunset flip for two. Tozawa went for the sunset flip buzzsaw kick, but Andrews flipped out of that and hit a dropkick for two. Tozawa went for the face chop, which Andrews blocked, but Andrews put his hands down for the jab and then ate a flurry of stomps in the corner and some corner chops.

Andrews hit a springboard crossbody for two. Tozawa landed a Shining Wizard and went for the super senton, but Andrews went to the outside. Tozawa hit a crazy suicide dive headbutt and almost rolled through it. Andrews hit shotgun knees in the corner and a northern lights before getting two off a corkscrew splash. Tozawa used a backdrop driver for two. He hit a flurry of forearms to the head before Andrews landed a pair of strikes, but Andrews then took a big boot.

Andrews hit the Stundog Millionaire and only got a near fall. He then went for a super rana. Tozawa grabbed him, but Andrews still hit the rana anyway. Andrews missed a Shooting Star Press. Tozawa hit a Trouble in Paradise, but Andrews reversed an Oklahoma roll and won it.

Backstage: Jack Gallagher and Drake Maverick

Fuentes interviewed Jack Gallagher about him facing Mustafa Ali next week. Maverick told him that this is a new show, and he is barring Gallagher from wearing a suit in his matches.

Backstage: Buddy Murphy and Drake Maverick

Ariya Daivari faces Buddy Murphy next week as well. Murphy talked about how he was once an NXT Tag Team Champion and how hard he’s had to train to make the 205 weight limit. We saw Maverick make him weigh in and then Murphy said that this is only the first step. He wants to walk down the aisle at WrestleMania and become champion. It’s astonishing how much better this show is with a destination in place.

Drew Gulak defeated Tony Nese in a Cruiserweight Championship tournament first round match

Gulak sloppily took Nese down to start the match. Nese dominated with power and locked on a modified leg-based version of an abdominal stretch. Gulak took control with some rope-springing moves like stomps and a stiff cover for two. They slugged it out mid-ring before Nese hit a big spin kick and a leaping Hart Attack for two. He went for the pumphandle driver, but Gulak shoved him off and they collided, with Nese getting two off that. Gulak hit a Minoru Suzuki-esque running dropkick and a harsh exploder for two.

Nese sent him down with a big elbow shot. Gulak grabbed Nese’s beard and slapped the crap out of him. God, that was just amazing. Gulak got two off a suplex. He locked on a guillotine, but Nese turned it into a suplex and then Gulak turned that into an apron suplex. Nese sent him outside and dove onto him on the floor with a Fosbury Flop. Nese landed the pumphandle driver for two. He hit a corner alley-oop, sending Gulak into the buckle before hitting a Backlund lift into a powerbomb in the corner. Nese went for the corner knee, but Gulak escaped.

They fought on the floor and Gulak tossed Nese into the announce table twice. Gulak snapped and connected with a sick lariat and then hit a repeated powerbomb. Gulak locked on the dragon sleeper and ended it via referee stoppage/submission. Holy crap was this great. Gulak is now a super-serious badass and it all works.

Gulak clenched for Nese’s fallen body on the floor and looked crazed. Everything about this reboot of 205 Live works so well.
