According to WWE sources, the attack by Curtis Axel on Daniel Bryan at the WWE Money in the Bank show wasn’t for nothing originally. The initial plan was for Axel and Bryan to have a match on the July 15 RAW. This would have pushed everything else we’ve seen back a week.
John Cena would have made the choice for his SummerSlam opponent the following week on the 7/22 RAW with the contract signing and gauntlet match on July 29. The Ryback/Cena Tables Match would’ve taken place a week later.
It’s unknown why WWE scrapped those plans, but the attack by Axel wasn’t meant to be completely random.
