WWF alumnus David “Jimmy Del Ray” Ferrier passed away last night at the age of fifty-two. Ferrier died of what is believed to have been a heart attack.
Ferrier was known as Jimmy Backlund in the Florida independent scene and Jimmy Graffiti during his WCW run. He began his career in 1985, trained by the Mighty Yankee, and worked in Florida Championship Wrestling under the Backlund name in a tag team with Brett Sawyer known as The Playboys. They held the FCW Tag Team Championship from July to August of 1989 before Del Ray moved on to Smoky Mountain Wrestling and teamed with Tom Prichard as the new member of the Heavenly Bodies. The team eventually debuted in the WWF in 1993 as part of a working agreement between SMW and WWF, and eventually signed with the WWF with Jim Cornette’s blessing.
The team worked as undercard heels until 1995, when they were released. They worked some shows for ECW until Prichard returned to WWF and Del Rey signed with WCW as Jimmy Graffiti. He retired in 1997 following a knee injury and helped train wrestlers with Steve Keirn in Florida.
On behalf of everyone here on the website, we send our condolences to the family, friends and fans of Mr. Ferrier.
