We now have some additional details on potential legal and financial issues that could arise between former Superstar Rey Mysterio (real name Oscar Gutierrez) after his exit from the company. Most of the financial issues come from the name and trademark of “Rey Mysterio”.
WWE reportedly owns the US trademarks on Rey Mysterio in terms of name, image, and likeness for merchandising, clothing, and anything related to using the name in conjunction with pro wrestling exhibitions.
Oscar is currently being advertised as “Rey Mysterio Jr.” in AAA, “Rey Mysterio” for a nightclub appearance during WrestleMania 31 weekend, and elsewhere as “Rey Misterio”. As mentioned earlier, Mysterio is charging $20,000 per appearance. A source speculates that the situation between Gutierrez and WWE could get ugly due to the name and trademark issues of “Rey Mysterio.” Both sides could apparently cite injuries, previous drug test failures, and race in making their legal arguments.
In addition, Gutierrez stopped cashing in his WWE checks for the last year. He did so out of concern that cashing the checks would hurt his potential legal battles later on. According to Gutierrez, he is “100 percent healthy” now, and he plans to return to the ring later in 2015.
