Apparently Kevin Owens wasn’t WWE’s first choice to be the next major call up from their NXT brand.
According to sources, WWE originally intended to call up Sami Zayn to the main roster after his NXT Takeover: Unstoppable match with Kevin Owens.
When Zayn went down with an injury, however, WWE instead decided to call up NXT Champion Kevin Owens.
As reported recently, Owens signed a new main roster contract with WWE, and will be working all RAW shows going forward. Owens will also continue to work in NXT until he loses the NXT Championship and transitions to the main roster full-time.
It’s also worth noting that WWE reportedly has “big plans” for Finn Balor on the main roster in the near future, although what exactly those plans are remains to be seen.
