WWE posted a video explaining the origin of the Royal Rumble match and the story of how Vince McMahon initially did not like the idea.
WWE hall of famer Pat Patterson pitched the idea to Mr. McMahon. Patterson wanted to think of a creative way to improve the classic battle royal, but the WWE chairman wasn’t sold, according to Patterson in his 2016 autobiography. “He laughed at the concept at first,” Patterson wrote. Patterson got another chance to pitch it when WWE and USA Network began planning a big TV special. TV executive Dick Ebersol ended up loving the idea. With that, the first official Royal Rumble match was born on Jan. 24, 1988, in Hamilton, Ontario. The slugfest has been a WWE tradition ever since.
