The originally planned SummerSlam and possibly WrestleMania main events changed a couple of weeks ago, according to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
The plan for SummerSlam was originally Brock Lesnar vs. Braun Strowman, but WWE has now apparently changed the plan to be Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns.
However, plans could, of course, change again, especially with the Samoa Joe vs. Brock Lesnar feud going over well and Joe being built up strongly. Joe was originally just supposed to be someone to put Lesnar over until his next match, and probably still will be, but it seems like WWE has to sort of protect him in his match against Lesnar if they still want Joe to be a credible “badass.”
The changed plans also mean that Reigns will likely go over in the ambulance match against Strowman. Strowman was originally supposed to go over and would then go on to face Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam. WWE may hold off on a Strowman vs. Lesnar match until WrestleMania or the Royal Rumble instead.
Reigns vs. Lesnar at SummerSlam also doesn’t necessarily mean that Reigns will win the title. The original plan was for Reigns to win the title from Lesnar at WrestleMania next year. WWE could still have that match, but it doesn’t seem as likely now if they already did the match at SummerSlam. Reigns winning would also allow WWE to have the Universal title on Raw each week instead of just part time.
If Reigns defeats Lesnar at SummerSlam, the most likely WrestleMania main event would be Roman Reigns vs. John Cena.
