Shinsuke Nakamura was interviewed by Gorilla Position and was asked about an incident during a 2017 match against John Cena where Nakamura dropped Cena badly on his neck with an exploder suplex.
After that incident, there were rumors that Vince McMahon was furious at Nakamura backstage and in this new interview, Nakamura confirmed that he got yelled at by “someone” backstage who was “pissed off” at him and Nakamura was even afraid that his career would be “finished.”
At about the 5:00 mark in the video below, Nakamura is asked about the incident and he replied:
“I don’t know if I can tell that or not… Some people, like uh, [were] upset backstage. Not John Cena. [Starts to mouth the letter ‘M’] But someone. Like, pissed off at me. ‘Why you did that?!’ I just thought, oh, my career is finished today. But everybody came to support me. Even John Cena. He said, ‘my fault.’ [laughs] What a good man.”
Here’s a gif of the suplex. Cena was “fine” afterwards. In the second GIF, Nakamura is seen saying, “I’m sorry” after the match and Cena replies with “Don’t be sorry” and raises his arm in victory.
