FOX Reportedly Wants Daniel Cormier to Be a Commentator on SmackDown

UFC Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier said over the weekend that he has been “talking to WWE” and they wanted him to audition for a spot on the commentary team. At a press conference in Las Vegas on Friday, Cormier said, “I have been talking to WWE because they wanted me to go in and do an audition as a member of the commentary team. That was my private little thing. Because of the [UFC 230] fight, I had to push it back. So there might be some DC in WWE shit coming.”

The reason for the audition is that FOX wants Cormier to be on the SmackDown commentary team when SmackDown moves to FOX in October of 2019, according to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio. FOX apparently “loves Cormier from the UFC and they don’t want to lose him,” Meltzer says. As previously mentioned, FOX also reportedly wants SmackDown to have more a sports presentation to it since it’ll be part of a Thursday-Sunday sports lineup for FOX.

Plans could all change by next year, though. Meltzer noted that Vince McMahon is usually not at SmackDown on Tuesdays so he isn’t around as much to yell into the ears of the commentators. When SmackDown moves to FOX, Vince could possibly end up at every SmackDown again.
