Daniel Bryan won the WWE Championship for the fourth time tonight on SmackDown and for the first time since 2014, when he vacated the title due to injury.
In the show’s opening segment, Paul Heyman caused tension between Bryan and AJ Styles, who then started to brawl with each other, leading to Shane McMahon making a WWE title rematch later in the night.
In the match, Styles accidentally knocked down the referee while attempting a Phenomenal Forearm, which led to Daniel Bryan hitting a low blow knee on Styles behind the ref’s back. Bryan, with a maniacal look on his face, then hit a running knee and picked up the win to become the new WWE Champion.
After the match, Bryan kept a heelish smirk on his face and attacked Styles, repeatedly stomping him in the head as the crowd booed.
