Rumored WrestleMania Main Event Plans

The planned women’s main event for WrestleMania is Ronda Rousey vs. Becky Lynch as of this week, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, though it “absolutely” could also end up as a three-way with Charlotte Flair.

A decision hasn’t been made yet about which match will main event the show and it probably won’t be made until close to show time.

The front runner for the men’s main event match is not yet known, though it will likely involve Brock Lesnar defending the Universal Championship. At one point, it was rumored that Seth Rollins would be challenging him, but it’s not clear anymore. Seth Rollins is currently the top active face in the company, so unless something changes and someone else catches fire, he seems like the most obvious choice right now. Braun Strowman will be facing Lesnar at the Royal Rumble and it’s been said that he will likely not be Lesnar’s opponent at WrestleMania.

Original Plans

For what it’s worth, the Observer also said that at certain points, the two planned main events were Roman Reigns vs. Dean Ambrose and Ronda Rousey vs. Natalya.

Rousey vs. Natalya seems hard to believe as a WrestleMania event, honestly, and it doesn’t seem like something WWE would do. It also contradicts past reports from the Observer that said that the WrestleMania main event was going to be Rousey vs. Charlotte, before Becky Lynch caught fire. But plans always change… Dave Meltzer said that the idea was that Natalya would turn heel on Rousey, but that was scrapped when Jim Neidhart died. WWE teased a Natalya turn recently and she and Rousey had a match on SmackDown, but nothing happened (yet). There will be two PPVs between the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania, so Natalya could be a possible opponent for Rousey at one of those if WWE still is going to turn her.

For the Reigns vs. Ambrose match, Meltzer speculated that the original plan was “probably” that Ambrose was going to turn heel on Reigns and not Rollins, which would have set up a match at WrestleMania, though he added that “that’s not a sure thing.”
