WWE reportedly has recently cancelled plans to hold a Backlash pay-per-view event this year.
SoCalUncensored reported that WWE recently made a change to their tentative events schedule for the remainder of this year with the next Saudi Arabia event being moved from the month of May to now a rumored June 7th date.
Backlash, while not officially announced, was initially planned to take place on June 16th in San Diego, California. It was reported that WWE officials decided to drop Backlash from this year’s schedule due to them not wanting to have events be held nine days apart.
SoCalUncensored also reported that another reason for Backlash’s cancellation was due to some within the company having issues with the optics of holding an event called Backlash following their next Saudi event considering the mainstream controversy caused from their previous Saudi event.
The Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer reported that it is currently unknown if WWE will also be cancelling house show events scheduled to take place from June 7th to June 9th in the United States. Meltzer also reported that is it unknown if this will also affect the status of the next NXT TakeOver event, which is currently scheduled to take place on June 8th in San Jose, California.
