WWE’s Current Plans for WrestleMania 39 – Main Event for Night 1, Bray Wyatt Update, Ronda Rousey Update

WWE reportedly is currently planning for the SmackDown Women’s Championship match of Rhea Ripley vs. Charlotte Flair (c) to main event Night 1 of WrestleMania 39, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

Dave Meltzer reported that his sources stated that while WWE officials had plans at one point for Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn vs. The Usos to potentially main event Night 1 of WrestleMania 39 on April 1st, they recently made the decision to go ahead with Ripley vs. Flair instead due to backstage political reasons. Meltzer reported that the Owens & Zayn vs. The Usos tag team match is still currently scheduled to take place on Night 1.

In regards to Bray Wyatt, Meltzer reported that it is currently not known if WWE will continue with their plans for Wyatt to face off against Bobby Lashley at the event. Meltzer reported that those spoken to earlier this week hinted that the match was still scheduled for the event but he was unable to get a confirmation over its status in recent days. Wyatt has been out of action for WWE since earlier this month due to an undisclosed “physical illness.”

In regards to Ronda Rousey, Meltzer reported that it is currently not known if WWE will continue with their plans for Rousey and Shayna Baszler to compete for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship at the event due to the status of Rousey’s arm injury. Meltzer reported that WWE’s plans as of last week were for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions to work both nights of WrestleMania 39.

In regards to other plans for WrestleMania 39, Meltzer reported that WWE is currently planning to scale back this year’s event for cost savings reasons. WWE reportedly will be bringing in less personnel to Inglewood and Los Angeles for the event. Several of WWE’s foreign language commentary teams reportedly are currently planned to provide commentary for the event at remote locations. Meltzer reported that the reason for the cost saving measures is due to WWE wanting to increase the profit margins for this year’s event ahead of their potential sale to a new owner.
